Wearing seat belts is one of the best ways of reducing fatal accidents or serious injuries, but people still don't do it. Here are some of the common reasons people don't wear seatbelts.

It's Just around the Corner

Many people think that they don't need seatbelts when driving for short distances. Unfortunately, this is a dangerous belief because an accident can occur at any time, even when taking a test drive around the block. If you get an accident and you were not wearing a seatbelt, it won't matter whether you were on a road trip across the country or you were going to the corner store. In either case, your risk of injury will still be higher than motorists with seat belts.

This Car Is Very Safe

There are also those who think that wearing seat belts doesn't help much because modern cars have numerous other safety measures. They think that seat belts have become redundant with the advent of airbags, lane assist technology, and automatic braking systems. Unfortunately, manufacturers would have stopped making seatbelts if that were the case. As it is, the overall safety of a car is the sum total of its safety features, including the seat belt.

It's Uncomfortable

Then there are also those who don't wear seatbelts because they believe seat belts are uncomfortable. This will definitely be the case if your seat belt is poorly adjusted; a poorly adjusted seat belt should be uncomfortable. Even if that were the case, however, isn't it better to be a bit uncomfortable and safe than to be comfortable with a high risk of injuries and death in case of a crash?

There is no Time

This is also a common reason for not wearing seat belts that doesn't make much sense. It doesn't take even a minute to fasten a seatbelt, and even if you were to take off at top speed, you would cover much ground in the time it takes to fasten a seat belt. Therefore, the idea of time-saving by not wearing a seatbelt is nothing other than a myth.

It Didn't Help So-And-So

Lastly, there are also those who argue that seat belts don't help much to protect people from nasty accidents. These people may even drop the names of those who died or sustained serious injuries even though they were wearing seatbelts. Well, no one has ever said that seat belts prevent all deaths and serious injuries. According to the CDS, seat belts reduce the risk of death by 45% and the risk of serious injury by 50%; those are pretty good odds, wouldn't you agree?
